CORPUS CHRISTI - Ryan Gusto spun four perfect innings in a Sunday evening start as the Hooks bested San Antonio, 4-1, before 4,889 fans at Whataburger Field.
With back-to-back wins, Corpus Christi secured the series by taking four of six from the Missions.
Gusto, who struck out five Sunday, retired 24 of 25 batters faced over two appearances vs. San Antonio on the week.
Aaron Brown was the pitcher of record for the Hooks, scattering one run and six hits over four innings of work.
Dating to the start of June, Brown boasts a 1.98 ERA over his last seven games (four starts).
Luis Aviles Jr., who recorded three of the six Hooks hits, put CC in front in the second with an RBI double, cashing in a Chad Stevens walk. Aviles opened the fifth with another two-bagger. The former Mission then stole second and came home on a ground ball by Garrett Wolforth.
Joey Loperfido opened the sixth with his second long ball in as many nights, an opposite-field shot onto the right-field berm. Loperfido, ranking third in the Texas League with a .977 OPS, is batting .352 with seven home runs and 14 RBIs in his last 20 games.
Jordan Brewer added a double in the sixth and then came around to score on a two-out knock by Aviles.
Cole McDonald picked up his sixth save with a 1-2-3 ninth.
Thanks to a 2.11 team ERA, the Hooks have won five of their last seven.
