Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
(CORPUS CHRISTI, TX) â Catcher Hector Gimenez and left fielder Carlos Rodriguez provided big two-out hits in Corpus Christi's four-run bottom of the fifth inning, spurring the Hooks on to a 7-2 win over the Wranglers Tuesday night at Whataburger Field. The victory lifts the Hooks to 18-34 on the season, while the Wranglers fall back to the .500 mark at 26-26.
For a second straight night the Hooks utilized the "big inning" to defeat Wichita. Monday, the Hooks notched six runs in the third on the way to a 10-5 win. Tuesday, the game was knotted 2-2 when Corpus Christi came to bat in the fifth. With runners at first and second and two out, third baseman Ray Navarrete was hit by a pitch, effectively loading the bases. Gimenez followed with a line drive single that plated both Eric Riggs and John Fagan for a 4-2 Hooks' lead. Navarrete went to third on the play.
That brought Rodriguez to the dish, and his double to the gap in left-center scored both Navarrete and Gimenez to make it a 6-2 game.
The Hooks tallied a cosmetic run in the eighth, taking advantage of Mark Saccomanno's leadoff triple. Three batters later, Brooks Conrad singled to right-center to get Saccomanno home for the final margin of 7-2.
Starter Mark McLemore (5-4) collected the win, surrendering just two unearned runs during his five innings on the hill. Monte Mansfield and Roberto Giron each provided two frames of shutout relief to help secure the win.
Wichita starter Mike Stodolka (1-5) sustained the loss, charged with six runs, five earned, in five innings of work.
Game three of the series gets under way at 7:05 pm Wednesday. Wranglers' lefty J.P. Howell (2-0, 2.25) gets the call for the visitors, while the Hooks will go with righty Chris Sampson (1-7, 4.08).
