Springfield Cardinals News Release
The month of May was a dazzling one for the Springfield Cardinals. The Cards earned their 16th victory of the month, scoring once in the eighth to tie and once in the ninth to win it, beating the Midland RockHounds by a score of 3-2 on Tuesday night at Hammons Field. The Cardinals finish the month of May at 16-13 and are now 25-27 overall.
Robinson Cancel capped another come-back, singling to center field with one out in the ninth inning, scoring Kevin Estrada from second base with the game-winning run. Evan Fahrner (5-1), who gave up a two-out game-tying RBI single to Aaron Herr in the eighth, walked Estrada on four pitches to open the ninth. After Shaun Boyd executed his second sacrifice bunt of the night, Travis Hanson was intentionally walked, putting runners at first and second with only one out. Cancel's second hit of the night, came on the first pitch, as Cancel blistered one to center field. The throw from center fielder Andre Ethier was late, giving the Cards their fourth win in five tries against the RockHounds.
The Cards took the lead in the first against Midland starter Jason Windsor. Robinson Cancel got a two-out rally started with a single. After a Tyler Minges single advanced Cancel to third, Papo Bolivar drove home the game's first run with an RBI hit to right field.
That 1-0 lead would hold up until the seventh inning, when Cards starter Oscar Alvarez would finally allow the Midland offense to get something going. Jeremy Brown reached on an error and one out later scored on Casey Myers third homer of the year. The drive into the Midland bullpen put the RockHounds up 2-1. Alvarez allowed a single to Jason Perry and was then lifted in favor of Cory Doyne. Doyne worked out of the seventh, then worked a scoreless eighth, keeping the game at 2-1.
The Cards got even at 2-2 in the bottom of the eighth. Papo Bolivar, who had three hits on the night, singled with one out and promptly stole second base. Aaron Herr's single to right field not only extended his hitting streak to a career-high 12 games, but it tied the game at 2-2.
Alvarez worked 6.1 innings, allowing just one earned run on five hits. He struck out four and walked just one. Evan Rust (2-1) worked a 1-2-3 ninth, picking up the win in relief.
The Cards, who have now won two straight games, made several transactions on Tuesday. Outfielder Reid Gorecki was transferred to Palm Beach of the Florida State League. Replacing Gorecki on the roster will be Cody Haerther, who will be active for tomorrow's game against Midland. The Cardinals will also have to make another roster move, as they will send Chris Lambert to the mound on Wednesday night against the RockHounds. Lambert, who was 7-1 with an ERA of 2.63 with the Palm Beach Cardinals, will join the club on Wednesday and make his Double-A debut. Lambert was St. Louis' 2004 first round pick in the June Draft. He will be opposed by Dallas Braden (2-1) of the RockHounds. The Cards have not made a roster move yet to open up the spot for Lambert.
Haerther, primarily used in left field defensively, was hitting .318 with eight homers and 30 RBIs in 46 games at Palm Beach. Haerther is making the drive up from Florida and is expected to join the Cardinals in Springfield on Wednesday.
Gorecki hit .182 with three home runs and 16 RBIs for the Cards in 46 games.
