Corpus Christi Hooks News Release

(CORPUS CHRISTI, TX) – Runs and hits have been at a premium this season for the Hooks. That made Monday's result special.

The Hooks racked up 15 hits on their way to a 10-5 win over Wichita in the first game of a four-game series at Whataburger Field. Corpus Christi improves to 17-34 on the season, while Wichita drops to 26-25.

Monday's win featured a six-run bottom half of the third, the most runs scored by the Hooks in an inning this season. The third inning, in fact, proved to be a very long frame, since the Wranglers scored twice in the top half to grab a 2-0 lead. Cory Aldridge and Josh Pressley provided RBI singles in the inning, which included 35 pitches by Hooks' starter Jason Hirsh.

Corpus Christi's rally in the bottom half began with Josh Anderson's single to left and subsequent steal of second base. Eric Riggs walked, and a wild pitch from Wichita starter Brian Bass (5-3) put runners at second and third. Brooks Conrad followed with a triple into the right field corner, and the game was tied at 2-2.

Carlos Rodriguez was next and delivered a bad-hop single past second baseman Brett Groves with the Wranglers' infield drawn in, giving Corpus Christi its first lead at 3-2. Ray Navarrete's single put runners at first and second for Charlton Jimerson, who drilled the first pitch he saw into left with both men on the move. The hit-and-run double plated both Rodriguez and Navarrete for a 5-2 Hooks' advantage. Jimerson took third on the throw home, which actually hit Navarrete in the left arm.

Dax Norris lined the next pitch from Bass to right fielder Wilkin Ruan for the first out in the third, as Jimerson tagged and scored on the play to make it 6-2. The next two batters were retired, but the Hooks had their biggest inning of the year. On two previous occasions the Hooks had scored as many as five runs in an inning. The five hits in the third on Monday also tied Corpus Christi's best output this season.

The Hooks were made to sweat a little when Pressley socked a two-run homer in the top of the eighth to bring the Wranglers to within three at 8-5, but the home team responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the eighth for the final margin of 10-5.

Conrad, batting third and playing at second base, led Corpus Christi's offensive surge by going 4-for-5 with a double, a triple, two runs and three RBI's. Conrad is now 7-for-12 in the last three games with six RBI's. Jimerson had a 1-for-3 night that included two runs, two RBI's and two stolen bases. Norris added two hits and two RBI's for the Hooks, who tallied in double digits for just the second time this season.

Relief pitcher Fernando Rijo (1-0) picked up the win with three innings of shutout work, striking out five in the process. Rijo was eligible for the win because Hirsh was removed after four innings on the hill. Hirsh had thrown 92 pitches and was charged with three runs on seven hits. Bass was saddled with the loss after allowing six runs during his three innings of work.

The two teams will go at it again Tuesday. Hooks' LHP Mark McLemore (4-4, 2.66) is slated to battle Wranglers' LHP Mike Stodolka (1-4, 5.40) in the 7:05 pm start. Tuesday is another "Half-price" Group Night at Whataburger Field.
