Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI - Lorenzo Quintana launched a walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the ninth to give the Hooks a dramatic 6-2 win Sunday at Whataburger Field, taking three of four from the division-leading Midland RockHounds.
Quintana, who entered the game in the sixth inning after catcher Chuckie Robinson was ejected for arguing balls and strikes, took the 0-1 pitch from John Gorman 382 feet over the left field fence for the win.
The 30-year-old Cuban also took Gorman deep to begin the eighth, which pulled the Hooks within a run at the time. Ronnie Dawson followed two batters later with his 14th home run of the year, tying the game at two and giving him a tie for the league lead in long balls.
Brandon Bailey made the start for Corpus Christi and got through 3.0 clean innings, but after walking Dairon Blanco to start the fourth he signaled for team trainer Christian Bermudez. Carlos Sanabria came on to throw 2.0 clean frames.
Bryan Abreu followed and loaded the bases in the sixth, only sustaining an RBI single from Nate Mondou to break the scoreless draw. The RockHounds plated their second run on an Edwin Diaz sacrifice fly in the eighth.
But the Hooks ambushed Gorman (L, 4-5) for all six runs over the final two stanzas.
Riley Ferrell got the win for Corpus Christi in his first appearance at Whataburger Field since June 22, 2018, tossing a scoreless ninth with two punchouts.
Dawson, Granden Goetzman and Stephen Wrenn each went 2-for-4 with a run scored in the win. Brallan Perez was 3-for-4 for Midland.
The Hooks hit the road for a three-game series with the Frisco RoughRiders beginning Monday. Cristian Javier (4-2, 2.15) is slated for Corpus Christi against Frisco's Ronald Herrera (0-2, 9.64).
