Arkansas Travelers News Release

CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS - The Arkansas Travelers were held to six base hits in a 6-2 defeat at the hands of the Corpus Christi Hooks on Friday night at Whataburger Field. Handed a 2-0 lead in the first inning, Trevor Reckling (L, 7-5) struggled with command walking four batters on top of six Hooks base hits and matched a season-high by allowing six runs (four earned). Veteran right hander Kenny Baugh (W, 4-2) survived a shaky first inning and retired 12 in a row at one point during a 5.2 inning performance in earning the victory.

Hooks catcher Jonathon Fixler, who entered the game batting .174, along with shortstop Wladimir Sutil led with two hits apiece. Fixler doubled, scored and knocked in the winning run with a bloop single in the fourth inning. Sutil swiped two bags and scored a run on top of his two singles.

Centerfielder Peter Bourjos was the only Traveler with two base hits and an extra-base hit to go along with a stolen base and a run scored.

The Travs stole five bases in the game with Nate Sutton and Coby Smith each pilfering two.

Bourjos opened the game with a bunt single and stole second base on the next pitch. A one-out line drive single to left field from Sutton knocked in Bourjos for the club's only RBI of the night. Mark Trumbo followed with a hard single to center that was overrun by Nick Moresi allowing Sutton to reach third base. With Hank Conger at the plate, Trumbo stole second base ahead of Fixler's throw and Sutton broke for the plate and stole home without a relay for a 2-0 lead. Baugh recovered to strike out Conger and Brian Walker to end the inning beginning his string of 12 straight outs.

Reckling started strong and retired six of the first Hooks batters, but Fixler led off the third with a double to the left-field corner. Moresi walked on four pitches to put the tying runs on base, then Sutil moved the runners up with a sacrifice bunt. Aaron Boone, playing in his third Major League rehab game for the Hooks, knocked in Fixler with a groundout to shortstop while Moresi advanced to third. After pitching around Texas League RBI leader Drew Locke, Reckling got ahead of Jason Castro 0-2 but bounced a slider off Conger that rolled in front of the plate by a few feet. Running as soon as the ball hit the dirt, Moresi scored while Conger chased after the ball to tie the game at 2-2.

With two outs in the home half of the fourth inning, Ray Sadler doubled to the left-field gap then Fixler looped an RBI single to center bringing in the go-ahead run for a 3-2 Hooks lead.

Things got rough for Reckling in the fifth inning as the Hooks loaded the bases with no outs on a single by Sutil, a walk and a throwing error on shortstop Wil Ortiz. Reckling walked Castro to force in a run then allowed an RBI single through the right side to Jimmy Van Ostrand. German Duran bounced into a double play scoring another run giving the Hooks a 6-2 lead.

Although Ryan Aldridge and Bryan Rembisz held the Hooks to no runs on three hits over the next three innings, the Travs managed just two base hits against the Hooks pen. Left hander Tyler Lumsden went 1.1 innings of scoreless relief, shutting the door on the only shot the Travs had to get back into the game getting Ryan Mount to ground to second base leaving the bases loaded in the sixth. Charlie Weatherby pitched the final two innings to close out the game.

Time of game was 2:36 and the paid attendance numbered 6,682.

Left hander Alex Torres (1-1, 7.00) will take the hill on Saturday evening as the Travelers open a series at San Antonio at 7:05 p.m. The Missions will counter with right hander Will Inman (5-2, 2.72).
