Springfield Cardinals News Release

The Springfield Cardinals and San Antonio Missions split a double-header on Friday, with the Redbirds winning game one by a score of 6-3, then dropping a ten-inning affair in game two by a score of 3-2.

Andrew Brown's three hits and two RBIs helped to lead the Redbirds to their win.

Cedric Hunter's walk-off single off the glove of centerfielder Jim Rapoport in the bottom of the tenth inning gave the Missions the split.

In the first game, Brown knocked in Springfield's first two runs, then keyed a decisive three-run sixth inning to give the Cardinals some much-needed insurance at 6-2.

Springfield's bullpen was a bit shaky, as Francisco Samuel worked around two walks in the sixth. Casey Mulligan worked the seventh, allowing a run on two hits and a hit batter. With the tying run at the plate, Mulligan got Sawyer Carroll to ground out to end the game.

Tyler Norrick (3-1) retired the only man he faced to pick up the win in relief.

Springfield starter Lance Lynn threw more than 100 pitches in just 4 2/3 innings. He allowed just two runs on four hits, but walked five men in the no-decision.

San Antonio's Cory Luebke (2-1) retired the first nine men he faced to start the game, but gave up five runs in five-plus innings to suffer the loss.

In game two, both clubs pitched pretty well, although they started to run out of arms late. Springfield reliever Marco Gonzalez (0-4) was solid through his first few innings, but stumbled a bit in his final frame, walking four batters and allowing the game-winning base hit to Cedric Hunter.

With the bases loaded and two outs, Hunter ripped a liner to right-center field. Centerfielder Jim Rapoport raced over and tried to make a diving catch, but saw the ball glance off the tip of his glove, as Logan Forsythe scored the game-winning run.

Springfield forced extra innings thanks to some sloppy San Antonio play. Brown reached to open the top of the seventh on a fielding error by shortstop Lance Zawadzki. With two outs, Brown scored from third on a wild pitch by reliever Carlos Guevara, tying the game at 2-2.

San Antonio infielder Anthony Contreras(1-0), making his fifth appearance on the mound this year, pitched a scoreless tenth-inning and earned the win.

The Cards (21-25, 59-57) and Corpus Christi Hooks open a three-game series on Saturday night, as Brandon Dickson (7-8) takes on Hooks' right-hander Sergio Perez (4-8). Game time from Corpus Christi on Saturday will be 7:05pm.

The Cards will return to Hammons Field on Wednesday, August 19th, for a six-game home stand. August 19th is Star Wars Night at Hammons Field, as fans are invited to dress as their favorite Star Wars character and enjoy the theme night. Tickets are available by calling (417) 863-2143 or online at springfieldcardinals.com. We hope to see you at Hammons Field...Escape to Cardinals Baseball!
