Springfield Cardinals News Release

The Springfield Cardinals dropped the opening game of their three-game set in Corpus Christi, falling to the Hooks by a final score of 5-2, on Saturday night at Whataburger Field.

Collin DeLome's two-run double with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning put the Hooks ahead to stay.

Cards' starter Brandon Dickson pitched well in the early-going, as he was spotted a pair of one-run leads.

Steven Hill's sac fly in the first put the Cards on the board at 1-0, over Hooks' starter Sergio Perez. After the Hooks tied the game in the second on DeLome's first of two hits, Hill answered again, as his team-leading 19th of the year, put Springfield up 2-1.

Dickson held that advantage until the sixth, when he surrendered DeLome's two-out double, which put the Hooks ahead 3-2.

Corpus Christi added a pair of runs and chased Dickson in the seventh, taking a 5-2 lead.

Hooks' closer Evan Englebrook worked a 1-2-3 ninth, fanning two of the three he faced to record his fifth save.

Dickson (7-9) allowed five runs over 6 2/3 innings, suffering his third straight defeat.

Perez (9-10) captured the win, allowing just two runs, one earned over six frames.

The Cards (21-26, 59-58) and Corpus Christi Hooks continue their three-game series on Sunday night, as Ryan Kulik (5-8) takes on Andy Van Hekken of Corpus Christi in the second game of the series. Game time is 6:05pm on Sunday evening.

The Cards will return to Hammons Field on Wednesday, August 19th, for a six-game home stand. August 19th is Star Wars Night at Hammons Field, as fans are invited to dress as their favorite Star Wars character and enjoy the theme night.
