Rochester Honkers News Release
(Rochester, MN) - - The Rochester Honkers Baseball Club was in Alexandria to take on the Alexandria Beetles for the second game of a three game series today, losing 9-6. The Honkers are closing out the first half after this series, a half that they have struggled through, with a record of 9-22.
The Honkers took an early lead, scoring four runs in the first, and two in the second, only to see them matched in both innings, with a score of 6-6 at the end of the second. It was all Beetles from then on, scattering three more runs throughout the game,
Kevin Johnson (So, Illinois) got his fourth start of the season, just one of them is a full start thus far, having two ending early due to rain. Johnson was chased early again, this time due to a high pitch count, throwing 35 pitches in the first inning, allowing four runs. League rules state that a pitcher cannot start an inning if pitching 35 or more in the previous inning.
Erik Mattingly (Jr, Creighton) came in relief for Johnson, pitching the next two innings, allowing five runs on three hits. Mattingly would be followed by Jordan Jakubov (RsJr, Kansas) for three innings. Jakubov allowed two runs on six hits striking out one. Nick Dolsky (So, Nebraska) pitched the final inning for the Honkers, throwing one hitless inning, walking one batter.
Aaron Jones had another good day at the plate, going 2-for-4 and scoring two runs. He was driven in both times by Ryan Hambright (So, Oregon), who had one hit in five trips to the plate.
The Honkers and Beetles will play the final game of the series tomorrow at 7:05pm, the last game of the first half. The Honkers will then travel south to take on the Mankato MoonDogs in a two game series at Franklin Rogers Park starting on July 7 at 7:05pm.
