Green Bay Rockers News Release
Wisconsin Rapids, WI - July 5th, 2011 - Green Bay hit three home runs in a 13-5 win over the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters on Tuesday night on the road. The win keeps the Bullfrogs in the hunt for the first half South Division championship with one game left.
Jacob May, Daniel Gerow and Jonathon Walsh all hit their first home run of the year in the victory. May was a triple shy of the cycle in a 3-5 day with three runs and three RBI. May started the scoring in the first with a solo homer. In the second inning the Bullfrogs tacked on three more runs. May hit an RBI double before Mitch Haniger drove in a run with a groundout. May would score the final run in the second frame on an error by the first baseman.
Green Bay followed that up with a four-run third inning that started with a Gerow solo shot. Rafters starter Brad Douthit walked five in the inning. May picked up an RBI single while Billy Moon had an RBI groundout. Douthit was removed before the 10th hitter of the inning for reliever Zach Mercer.
In the fifth inning Green Bay put up another four spot. Mitch Haniger led off with a double. He scored on a throwing error by the catcher as he was stealing third base. Mercer would walk two around a pair of outs before Alec Mehrten and Phillip Ervin had RBI singles. The Bullfrogs scored 12 runs in the first five innings and had multiple hits in each of the first five frames.
Zak Hermans started for the Bullfrogs and earned the victory. He threw six innings allowing four runs. Kyle Lindquist came out of the bullpen for three innings and allowed only one run. The Rafters scored a pair of runs in both the fourth and fifth inning against Hermans. Wisconsin Rapids had three hits and a sacrifice fly in the fourth. In the fifth they used a pair of RBI doubles. Rapids would only get as close as six runs after the third inning.
Green Bay improves to 19-13 in the first half. They are tied for second with Battle Creek and Eau Claire who both won on Tuesday while Madison is one game ahead of the three teams after losing. If Green Bay, Battle Creek and Eau Claire win and Madison loses on Wednesday than the 'Frogs would win the tie-breaker and earn the first-half South Division Championship. The Bullfrogs will close out the first half with the rubber match of a three game series with the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters on Wednesday at 7:05 pm.
