Willman's Strong Start Leads Lunkers To Victory

July 5, 2011 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Brainerd Lakes Area Lunkers News Release

THUNDER BAY, ON - Joe Willman is proving with every start why he should be on this year's All-Star team.

Willman threw eight innings of two-hit baseball and gave up only one run in the Lunkers 3-1 victory over the Thunder Bay Border Cats on Tuesday night at Subway Field at Port Arthur Stadium.

Thunder Bay starter Zak Miller only threw three innings as he was smoked by a Wade Wass single to start the fourth. He had to leave the game.

With the Lunkers leading 1-0 in the fourth, Reid Rooney came on in relief for Thunder Bay, and walked the first two batters he faced. Then, Andrew Letourneau was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score Wade Wass. After two straight runners were retired at the plate, a Dan Olinger walk with the bases loaded brought home the third Lunker run of the game.

The lone Thunder Bay run came after Joe Willman airmailed the Lunker first baseman Ryan Abrahamson on a routine ground ball, allowing Thunder Bay's Ino Patron to score from second base. The Border Cats almost got a second run if it were not for the amazing diving catch by Paul Toboni out in right field to end the inning.

Miller takes the loss for Thunder Bay. Chase Webb came on in relief in the 9th to record his second save.

The Lunkers and Border Cats finish the 1st half of the Northwoods League season Wednesday night at 6:05 CT. Aaron Griffin gets the start for the Lunkers against Logan Birr for Thunder Bay.
