Brainerd Lakes Area Lunkers News Release
ROCHESTER - With the game tied at three in the Top of the 9th, the Brainerd Lakes Area Lunkers struck for five runs in the 9th and held on for an 8-3 win over the Rochester Honkers Thursday night at Mayo Field. Crazy Game Ends in 8-3 Lunker Win
Lunker catcher Jon Crist was hit by a pitch by Honker pitcher Garrett Benson with the bases loaded in the 9th to bring home the go-ahead run. Another hit batter, an error and a two-run single from Matt Hillsinger would bring home the next four Lunker runs.
This was after the Bottom of the 8th when the Honkers tied the game at three. Rochester appeared to take the lead when Johnny Coy scored on a sacrifice fly from Davy Wright, but the Lunkers appealed. According to home plate umpire Chase Eade, Coy left third base too early and was called out, which ended the inning.
Charlie Henderson made his final start in the Lunker uniform and took a no decision, pitching six innings with two runs given up and six strikeouts. The win goes to Chase Webb who came in to the game in the 8th inning and held the fort. He also pitched a scoreless ninth.
The loss goes to Benson who gave up all five runs in the Top of the 9th.
Dan Olinger had a nice night for the Lunkers, going 2 for 3 with two RBIs. Hillsinger was 4 for 6 with three runs scored and two RBIs.
The Lunkers improve to (15-21) with the win and now move a half game ahead of Rochester in the North Division standings. The Honkers fall to (14-21).
The finale of the series is Friday night at Mayo Field. John McLeod will get the start for the Lunkers with DJ Snelten starting for the Honkers.
