
Honkers Toppled by Brainerd, 8-3

(Rochester, MN) - The Rochester Honkers continued to struggle, dropping their fourth straight game to the Brainerd Lakes Area Lunkers by a score of 8-3 on Thursday night at Mayo Field. The Honkers fall to 14-21 in the second half with three games remaining.
The Honkers would never lead in the game, but keep it close throughout, never being down by more than two, and take a 3-3 tie into the ninth inning before allowing five runs in the top of the ninth.
Elliott Engle (Fr, Doane College) got the start for the Honkers, his second of the season. He would last seven innings, allowing just three runs on eight Lunker hits. Engle would get the no-decision in the game, leaving with the score 3-2 in favor of Brainerd. Garrett Benson (So, Bethany Lutheran) would get the loss in the game, pitching two innings and allowing five runs on two hits.
Johnny Coy (RsJr, Wichita State) made a big impact on the game, driving in all three Honker runs and going 2-for-4 with a double. Coy drove in two in the third inning with a single, and one more in the eighth with his double to deep left field. Erik Mattingly (Jr, Creighton) would also have a solid day at the plate, going 2-for-3 in the game, and Tony Kemp (Fr, Vanderbilt) scored two runs while going 1-for-3 at bat.
Devin Thaut (Jr, Southern Poly State) would go 1-for-4 in the game, singling in the ninth inning. That single would be the 100th hit of his Northwoods League career, spanning two seasons as a Honker.
The Honkers and Lunkers will be back at it tomorrow night, for the final game of the season at Mayo Field. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm and it is Fan Appreciation night at the ballpark. The Honkers will play two games in Duluth after tomorrow's game to finish out the 2011 Northwoods League season.
