Green Bay Rockers News Release
Battle Creek, MI - August 10th, 2011 - The Bullfrogs lost their second game in a row for the first time in nearly a month after a 13-5 loss to the Battle Creek Bombers on the road. Green Bay had their chances once again, but stranded 13 runners on base in the loss. A night after the Bombers scored six runs in the third inning, Battle Creek scored another five runs in the third inning on Thursday powered by a grand slam from Rhett Goodmiller.
With the loss Battle Creek and Green Bay are tied for first place in the South Division in overall record and second half record. La Crosse beat Waterloo on Thursday so they pull to within a game of Green Bay and Battle Creek in the second half standings. If Battle Creek wins the second half, Green Bay would earn a berth to the playoffs by way of owning the best overall record in the South Division beside the Bombers.
The Bullfrogs jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI ground out from Ryan Allgrove. The Bombers responded right away with three runs of their own in the first. Jordan Dean led off with a double and was driven in by Troy White. After a walk, three pitches scooted past the Bullfrogs' catcher to bring in a pair of runs to make the game 3-1 in favor of Battle Creek.
The big blow came in the third inning once again for the Bombers. A pair of singles began the inning before Brett Wiley popped out to the shortstop. Mark Garcia started for the 'Frogs and walked a pair of runners to bring in the inning's first run across. Rhett Goodmiller stepped up with one out and hit a grand slam to right field to give the Bombers an 8-1 lead.
Green Bay pulled to within four runs in the fifth inning. Nick Stein hit a double and Ryan Allgrove walked in front of Paul Hoenecke who blasted his ninth home run of the year to make it an 8-4 ball game. It is Hoenecke's ninth of the year which is one short of the Bullfrogs' single season record. The Bombers would score five more runs over the final four innings to keep the 'Frogs at bay and earn their 40th win of the year.
Nick Stein went 2-4 with a double in the ball game along with two runs scored. Hoenecke went 2-4 with three RBI. Green Bay will look to avoid the sweep on Friday evening at 6:05 pm CST.
