Madison Mallards News Release

MADISON, WI - July 5, 2011. The Madison Mallards will take on the Eau Claire Express Tuesday at 6:35 p.m. at Carson Park in one of the Mallards' biggest games since 2008. The Mallards sit two games ahead of the three second place teams in the South Division and have a magic number of one to clinch a title with two games left to play. A victory Tuesday would give the Mallards their first playoff appearance since 2008.

It will be a tough task for the Mallards, as Eau Claire has played tough at home with a 13-3 record at Carson Park. However, one of those three losses came at the hands of the Mallards Monday in an 11-2 win.

Pitcher Nick Sutherland (Minnesota State - Mankato) will be making his first start of the season after appearing in ten games out of the Mallards' bullpen. Sutherland is 0-1 on the season with a 3.68 ERA in 22 innings pitched. He has walked five and struck out fifteen. Sutherland made one appearance against the Express this season, contributing to the Mallards' 13-8 victory back on June 15. He was roughed up a bit, giving up three runs in two innings of work.

Throwing for the Express will be Matt McDaniel (San Diego State). McDaniel is 1-3 this season with an ERA of 4.97. Like Sutherland, McDaniel pitched in the June 15 game and was the losing pitcher for Eau Claire as he gave up five runs (four unearned) through six innings. Eau Claire is 2-3 in games in which McDaniel has pitched, and has not won since June 20th when McDaniel made is lone relief appearance in a 2-1 win over Green Bay.

Tuesday's game is game two of the three-game series between the two division rivals. The series will wrap up Wednesday in the first-half finale for both teams.

Scoreboard Watch Other than the Express, the Green Bay Bullfrogs and Battle Creek Bombers are also in the hunt for the first half championship. Both teams are two games back of the Mallards as well. A loss by either team Tuesday would eliminate them from first half title contention.

Green Bay plays at Wisconsin Rapids starting at 7:05 p.m. and Battle Creek will play at Wisconsin starting at 6:35 p.m.
