Rochester Honkers News Release

(Rochester, MN) - The Rochester Honkers lost in the bottom of the ninth inning in St. Cloud on Thursday night by a final score of 6-5. The winning run was surrendered after a double and two wild pitches.

The Honkers continued their early-inning success with two runs in the top of the first off a double by third baseman Brandon Defazio (San Mateo). Rochester scored another run in the second inning on a solo homerun from leftfielder Ben Lahn (Lamar CC). The long ball was Lahn's fourth of the year.

The Rox would answer right back with five runs in the bottom of the second inning to make it 5-3.

Honkers starter DJ Snelten (Minnesota) got roughed up in this one. The tall lefty lasted just 4.1 innings allowing five earned runs on eight hits and two walks. All the runs scored on Snelten came in that big St. Cloud second inning.

Elliot Engle (Doane) came on in the fifth inning in relief of Snelten and remained in the game through the sixth without allowing a run.

Trailing 5-3 still in the top of the seventh inning, first baseman Chad Wallach (Cal State Fullerton) hit a solo homerun to make it just a one-run game. Wallach finished the night 3 for 5. The Honkers tied it in the top of the eighth inning on a Jared Allen (Tennessee) double to plate Jordan Parr (Illinois).

However the Honkers bullpen would not be able to send it to extra innings.

With the game all knotted up in the bottom of the ninth and one out, St. Cloud second baseman Chris Paul (California) doubled and later came around to score on two wild pitches from Honkers pitcher Dylan Nelson (San Mateo) to win the game. Nelson is now 0-1.

The Rochester defeat is just the second loss in their last nine games.

Defazio went 3 for 5 with two RBIs in the game while Jordan Parr and designated hitter Trevor Podratz (Hawai'i) picked up two hits apiece.

The Honkers (13-16) and Rox (7-20) will play the final game of the three-game series tomorrow night in St. Cloud at 7:05 PM. Starting for the Honkers is lefthander Matt Kent (Texas A&M). Kent is 2-1 in four starts with a 2.20 ERA. He will oppose St. Cloud lefty starter Tadd Johanson (Wayne State) who is 1-1 with a 3.20 ERA.

The Honkers are not back at home until Saturday, July 7th when they take on the Willmar Stingers at 7:05 PM.
