Madison Mallards News Release
La Crosse, WI - June 28, 2012. The Madison Mallards (12-17) hit the road tonight to start a three game series with the South Division leading La Crosse Loggers (21-7). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm.
On Wednesday the Mallards dropped the rubber match of their series with the Wisconsin Woodchucks (14-14) 11-8. The game was not played well on either side as both teams combined for 17 walks and eight errors.
Mallards catcher Taylor Gushue (Florida) powered the offense with his first home run as a Mallard, a three run towering shot to left field in the seventh inning.
Looking to get the Mallards in the win column today is left-hander Anthony Marzi (Connecticut). Marzi (2-0) was impressive in his last start, allowing no runs in 6.0 innings of work to set up the Mallards for a 5-0 win over the Lakeshroe Chinooks (13-15). So far this season, Marzi has been the Mallards most consistent starter, carrying a 2.11 ERA and a 1.36 WHIP.
Lefty Jake Stassi (Long Beach State) will take the ball for the Loggers. In his second season with the Loggers, Stassi (1-0) has been a difference maker in the Loggers rotation. In his last time out, Stassi shutout the Battle Creek Bombers (12-16) through 6.0 innings on the mound to earn his first win of the season. After three starts, the lefty carries a 1.62 ERA and 12 strikeouts.
By winning two games or sweeping the series, the Mallards have a chance to spoil the Loggers run at the first half division title. With seven games left in the first half and a three game lead over the Green Bay Bullfrogs, the Loggers will have to close out strong to clinch a playoff berth.
The Mallards return to the "Duck Pond" on Friday, June 29th, to play the second game of their series with the Loggers. That night will feature "Duck Pond" LEGO kits presented by briXwerX studios and in-game entertainment by Inflatamaniacs.
The 2012 season is upon us! Single-game tickets are on-sale for all Mallards home games!
The Madison Mallards are part of the 16-team Northwoods League. The Northwoods League has more teams, plays more games, and draws more fans than any other Summer Collegiate Baseball League in North America.
