Honkers Hold on to Defeat Express

(Rochester, Minn.) - The Rochester Honkers took their first lead of the game in the eighth inning and held on to defeat the Eau Claire Express 2-1 on Monday at Carson Park. The Honkers won their first game on the road in the second half to improve to 2-4 in the second half and 19-23 overall. Eau Claire falls to 3-3 and 16-25.

Honker's starting pitcher Zak Devermann (Illinois) tossed a gem despite receiving a no decision. The left-hander threw five innings giving up one run on five hits and struck out five. In his last two starts, Devermann has tossed 12 innings giving up just two runs on eight hits. Matthew Goytia (Colorado State Pueblo) was rewarded with his second win of the year after working two scoreless innings. Both Michael Brandt (Augustana) and Joshua Ibarra (Concordia Irvine) tossed a scoreless inning for the Honkers. For Ibarra, he recorded his seventh save of the year.

In the fourth, Andrew Pratt (Lubbock Christian) gave the Express a 1-0 lead on one swing of the bat ripping his second home run of the year.

The Honker's offense collected just two hits heading into the eighth but finally came alive to score two runs. Alex McGarry (Oregon State) led off the eighth inning with a single and was later driven in on a single off the bat of Mike Peabody (UC Irvine). Jaylon McLaughlin (Nevada) drove in the go-ahead run with a single up the middle to put the Honkers up 2-1.

Jimmy Fouse (Dallas Baptist) took the loss in relief for Eau Claire. Fouse gave up two runs on three hits in one inning of work.

The Honkers will travel to Willmar for a two-game series with the Stingers beginning on Tuesday. Cole Quintanilla (Texas) is scheduled to start for Rochester, the Texas native has posted a 0-1 record and a 6.13 ERA. Trevor Divinski (Minnesota State) is scheduled to start for the Stingers, Divinski has a 2.73 ERA and a 2-1 record. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
