Madison, Wis. - The Madison Mallards (1-5, 29-13) rolled to a 3-0 win over the Battle Creek Bombers (4-2, 20-21) on Monday afternoon in Battle Creek. The Mallards were guided to the victory by starting pitcher Brian Morrell (Notre Dame) and relievers Leon Hunter (North Carolina A&T) and Nicholes Morales (San Jose State). The trio combined to hold the Bombers to only five hits and only issued four walks.
Turning Point
While Mallards starter Brian Morrell was cruising through the game's early innings, the Madison offense opened the scoring with a two-run double by Trevor Boone(Oklahoma State) in the top of the fifth. Morrell would follow by working a scoreless bottom of the frame, finalizing his day with 5.0 innings pitched and only one hit allowed.
In the bottom of the seventh, Leon Hunter worked out of a jam to preserve the 2-0 Madison advantage. With the bases loaded and only one out, Hunter struck out Will Baker then induced a groundout to keep the Bombers off the board. Hunter then gave way to Morales in the eighth and the Mallards held on to the 3-0 win.
