Rochester Honkers News Release
(Rochester, MN) - In their first meeting with the Willmar Stingers since June 13, the Rochester Honkers dropped game one of a two game series 7-3, Thursday night at Bill Taunton Stadium in Willmar. The loss causes the Honkers to fall to 10-9 in the second half, trailing the Alexandria Beetles by 3.5 games.
The Stingers would take an early 1-0 lead in the second inning with a home run, and then add to that in the third with two more big fly's to take a 3-0 lead. The Honkers would get one run in the fourth and then tie the game up in the seventh before losing it in the bottom of the eighth following a four run eighth inning by the Stingers.
The Honkers would get a short start out of their starting pitcher D.J. Snelten (Fr, Minnesota). Though he only allowed one run on one hit, Snelten threw over the maximum pitch mark for an inning of 35 in the second inning, forcing him to leave the game. The Honkers would get a solid effort of relief out of Tim Peterson (So, Western Nevada), throwing five innings, and allowing four runs on six hits while striking out eight. Peterson would leave the game with two runners on and a tie game, but be credited with the loss after one of those runners scored the go-ahead run.
The Honkers got another solid day at the plate from lead off man Tony Kemp (Fr, Vanderbilt). Kemp went 2-for-3 at the plate with one RBI, improving his batting average to .333 on the season. Bryan Karraker (Jr, New Mexico State) would have his second consecutive multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 with a run scored. Karraker upped his batting average to .288 on the season today.
The two teams will face each other again tomorrow for the final game of the short series. The Honkers will then travel to St. Cloud and play four games in two days against the River Bats. Rochester will have Aaron Siefken (Jr, Bethany Lutheran College) on the mound tomorrow, making his ninth start of the season. Siefken leads all Honker pitchers in innings pitched this season. First pitch Friday night in Willmar is 7:05 pm.
