Madison Mallards News Release

WAUSAU, WI - The Madison Mallards defeated the Wisconsin Woodchucks 12-6 Thursday night at Athletic Park. The 12 runs scored by the Mallards are the most the team put up in a single game since a 12-1 victory at Green Bay July 1, and also the most in any game of the second half of the season.

It was pretty clear from the get-go that the Mallards were clicking on all cylinders, as they scored in each of the first five innings.

Justin Parr (Illinois) led off the game with a double and scored on an error, and Willie Argo (Illinois) also scored in the first on an RBI single by Matt Juengel (Texas A&M). In the second inning, Michael Handel (Minnesota) belted his first home run of the season and drove in three to bring the Mallards' lead to 5-0. Andrew Barna had a two-out, RBI double and scored in the third, and Andrew Wasmund also drove in a run with a two-out hit of his own. Tyler Jones (Long Island) also hit a three-run home run in the fourth, and the scoring concluded in the fifth as Wasmund scored on an RBI sacrifice fly by Argo.

Every single Mallards hitter had at least one base hit in the game. Parr led the team with three hits, and the middle of the Madison lineup (Juengel, Jones, Barna, and Wasmund) all had two hits as well.

Mallards' starter Rusty Shellhorn (Texas Tech) was the main benefactor of the offensive attack and picked up his fifth win of the season by going five complete innings. He allowed four runs (one unearned) and scattered six hits to improve to 5-2 on the season. He also walked two and struck out five, and his season earned run average is now 2.54.

Travis Parker (St. Louis) and Dan Tobik (Tennessee - Martin) combined to pitch the final four innings in relief to secure the win.

The Wisconsin offense was also impressive Thursday, posting six runs and 13 hits. The team was led by Danny Susdorf (UC-San Diego) who went 4-for-5 with two runs scored out of the leadoff position. Jamie Bruno (LSU) and Robbie De La Cruz (UNLV) were the other Woodchucks to have multiple hits

in the game. Brian Carroll (UCLA) also contributed with a home run for Wisconsin, who now sits at 8- 12 in the second half of the season.

Woodchucks' starter Adair Robles (San Diego Christian) did not fair well in his first start of the season. Robles (0-1) took the loss after going three innings and allowing seven runs on eight hits. He walked one and struck out two.

The Mallards and Woodchucks will finish their two-game series Friday in Wausau with another 6:35 p.m. start. Estevan Uriegas (Texas A&M) will pitch for the Mallards. He will go up against Aaron Gates (Pepperdine).
