Rochester Honkers News Release
(Rochester, MN) - The Rochester Honkers and Mankato MoonDogs hit a combined eight homeruns in today's game at Mayo Field, with the MoonDogs running away with the game, by a final score of 18-7. Each team led their first at-bats off with a homerun, providing many fireworks during a game that was followed by a Fourth of July firework show.
The Honkers got homeruns by Anthony Hutting (So, Cal State Fullerton) who led off the game with a homer to right, Johnny Coy (RsJr, Wichita State) and Reid Roper (Fr, Illinois) who both hit their second home runs of the season. Roper also doubled on the day, going 2-for-2 with two walks and three RBI.
Jake Marasco (Jr, Kansas) also had a strong day at the plate, going 2-for-4 with one walk. Aaron Jones (Fr, Oregon) also had a two hit day, making his season debut behind the plate for the Honkers.
Bennett Klimesh (RsJr, Trinity College) made his Northwoods League debut on the mound after finishing up a temporary contract in the Cape Cod League. Klimesh was chased early, only throwing 1.1 innings and allowing eight runs on five hits. Klimesh was followed by an array of relief pitchers and position players to eat up innings. Most notably, infielder Davy Wright (So, TCU) pitched one inning, striking out the side.
The Honkers were upstaged by the Northwoods League leader in home runs, Shaun Cooper, who homered three times, driving in six of the 18 MoonDog runs.
The Honkers and MoonDogs have a short turnaround to tomorrow's 1:05 pm start at Mayo Field. The Honkers will have Drew Bowen (Jr, Oral Roberts) on the hill, making his fourth start of the season. Bowen is 1-1 on the year. The Honkers will then travel to Alexandria and Mankato for a five game series featuring three games against the Alexandria Beetles, and two more against the MoonDogs.
