
Honkers Come Up Short on the Road in Loss to Bucks

Rochester,MN - The Rochester Honkers fell behind early and never were able to get a lead in a 5-3 loss to the Waterloo Bucks on Wednesday afternoon at Riverfront Stadium in Waterloo, IA.
Honkers starting pitcher Mason Pingel (Western Illinois) walked the first three Waterloo batters of the game to load the bases for Waterloo's Kevin Needham. Pingel got Needham to ground into a double play, but the Bucks scored the first run of the game on the play. Jake Mahon and John Ziznewski each followed with RBI base hits to give Waterloo a 3-0 lead after one inning.
Tucker Tharp (Kansas) delivered a two-out, two-run single to score Tyler Baker (Wichita State) and Reid Roper (Illinois) to cut the deficit to 3-2 after an inning and a half. With the pair of RBI, Tharp now has a team-high ten RBI on the season. The Honkers did more damage with two outs in the top of the fifth inning when Kalei Hanwahine (Hawaii) singled, stole second base, and scored on a single from Carter Burgess (Sam Houston State) to tie the score at 3-3. Burgess led the Honkers offense with a pair hits and a RBI.
The Bucks responded in their half of the fifth inning with an RBI single from Mahon to score Pat McKenzie. They added an unearned run off of reliever Brian Schwarzbach (Pennsylvania) in the bottom of the sixth to increase their lead to two runs at 5-3. Pingel took the loss (1-2) as he allowed four runs on six hits in 4.1 innings. Schwarzbach followed with 1.2 innings in relief without giving up an earned run and Seth Fuller (Black Hawk College) pitched two scoreless innings out of the Rochester bullpen. Taylor Byrd earned the win (1-2) for the Bucks as he allowed three runs on five hits in six innings of work. Adam Dian picked up his third save of the season for Waterloo with a perfect ninth inning.
The two teams will finish a three-game series on Thursday June 13 at 6:35 p.m. at Riverfront Stadium in Waterloo, IA. Logan Spitzack (St. Cloud State) is slated to make his third start of the season for the Honkers (7-8.) He has a 0.00 ERA through 13 innings this season. TJ Renda (Alabama St.) is scheduled to start for Waterloo (9-5.) Rochester will return home to Mayo Field for a four-game home stand with Thunder Bay and Alexandria that begins on Friday June 14 at 7:05 p.m.
