Honkers Come Back Falls Short in Nail-Biter to Rox

Rochester, Minn- The Rochester Honkers fell to the St. Cloud Rox 4-3 on Wednesday night at Mayo Field. It was the final home game for the Honkers in the 2016 season.

With the Honkers trailing 3-1 in the seventh inning, Kyle Kasser (Oregon) hit a two-RBI double to tie the game at three. Unfortunately, the Rox added a run in the eighth inning when Brett Pope (Western Carolina University) hit a RBI double to score Mason Mamarella (Kent State) and gave the Rox a 4-3 win.

The Rox scored in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead when Pope drove in a run to give St. Cloud a 1-0 lead. The Honkers tied the game in the bottom half of the inning when Ryan Fitzpatrick launched a solo shot to left field.

Brandon Illies (North Carolina) hit an RBI double in the fifth that scored two runs and gave the Rox a 3-1 lead.

Kasser's doubled tied it, but St. Cloud was able to edge out the Honkers in the top of the eighth.

Robert Paccione (LIU Post) got the start for the Honkers; he went five innings, allowed three runs on nine hits, walked four and struck out three. Lance Berringer (0-2) (Washington) took the loss for the Honkers; he pitched the eighth inning and gave up one run on two hits and struck out one. Stevie Ledesma (Santa Barbara City) pitched the ninth inning and walked one.

Dan Metzdorf (Boston College) got the start for the Rox; he went six innings, allowed one run on six hits, walked three and struck out three. Collin Strall (3-2) (LSU) picked up the win in relief; he pitched the final 2.2 innings of scoreless baseball, allowed one hit, walked one and struck out four.

Kasser and Fitzpatrick went 2-for-5 to lead the Honkers; Kasser added two RBI and Fitzpatrick added an RBI and a run scored. Pope went 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored to lead the Rox.

The Honkers are on the road for their final four games of the season. It starts Thursday in Duluth as the Honkers take on the Huskies, with first pitch set for 6:35 p.m. Friday, the Honkers and Huskies play again at 6:35 p.m. Saturday and Sunday the Honkers will go to La Crosse to battle the Loggers. First pitch on Saturday is set for 6:05 p.m. and Sunday's first pitch is set for 5:05 p.m.
