Battle Creek Battle Jacks News Release
The Battle Creek Bombers fell to the Lakeshore Chinooks, 6-5 Thursday night, as the Chinooks walked off at C.O. Brown Stadium in a game suspended Wednesday night at Kapco Park and resumed the next day in Battle Creek.
The Bombers would get on the board first in the top of the second as Daniel Jipping launched a solo home run off Marshall Kasowski over the left field fence to give the Bombers a 1-0 lead. Jipping's home run, his 13th of the season, makes him the Bombers' single season leader in home runs, surpassing Daniel Rockett's 12 home runs in the 2011 season.
An RBI double by Dean Miller in the top of the third would extend the lead to 2-0, as Nick Podkul scored from second, the Chinooks would comeback to take the lead in the bottom of the inning.
Lakeshore loaded the bases against Colton Bradley, forcing the Bombers to make a call to the bullpen and bring in David Inman. But a hit by pitch and Matt Johnson's single would give the Chinooks a 3-2 lead.
And in the fifth, Lakeshore would add to their lead, as a Kevin Riley drew a leadoff walked and Tim Dalporto followed with a single to put runners at first and second with one out. Anthony Ruden, who relieved Inman after 1.1 innings pitched, would strike out Johnson but Owen Miller singled to extend the lead to 4-2 and an error would allow Dalporto to come around to score to make it a 5-2 Lakeshore lead.
The Chinooks would hold the Bombers to just one base runner between the fourth and seventh innings, but in the eighth Battle Creek would begin their late inning rally. With one out, Podkul and Miller drew back-to-back walks before Jipping grounded into a fielder's choice to put runners at the corners with two outs.
Jacob Blunt's RBI single would cut the Chinooks' lead to 5-3 and then the Bombers would tie things up in the top of the ninth after a scoreless frame from Edgar Sanchez.
Storm Joop led off the ninth against Cole Gnetz with a single, before Cody Sporrer walked to put the game tying run on first base. A sacrifice bunt from Jarrod Watkins would advance the runners 90 feet before Christian Helsel's RBI groundout cut the lead to 5-4.
Podkul drew another walk, Gnetz' second of the inning, before Miller tied things up with an RBI single.
Jonathan Cheshire would shut down the Chinooks in the bottom of the ninth, as the Bombers would head to extras for just the second time this season.
The Bombers would get runners on in the tenth and eleventh but Gnetz would strand both before the Chinooks put runners on first and second with nobody out in the bottom of the eleventh.
Cheshire though, would get a fielder's choice, strikeout and flyout to get out of the jam before the game would be suspended and resumed in the top of the twelfth inning in Battle Creek at C.O. Brown Stadium.
Dan Twitty stranded Jacob Blunt at first in the top of the twelfth before the Chinooks loaded the bases against Krystien Johnson-Battilana and Kurtis Brown, pinch hitting for Darius Sewell, walked things off for the Chinooks with his RBI single.
With the loss, the Bombers fall to 35-32 on the season and their magic number remains at one, while the Chinooks move to 32-35 on the season.
The Bombers and Chinooks will play game two of the doubleheader Thursday night before playing the final game of the series on Friday night at 7:05.
