Southwest Michigan Devil Rays News Release

BATTLE CREEK, MICH. -- The Southwest Michigan Devil Rays pounded out 12 hits and 10 runs to beat the Kane County Cougars 10-5 and inch closer to a playoff berth Monday night at C.O. Brown Stadium.

Brandon Mann picked up his ninth win of the season behind 5 1/3 perfect innings and seven shutout frames in a one-hit, two-walk effort. The stars on the offensive side were Shaun Cumberland who had two hits, one triple and three RBI. Tommy Nichols drove in two runs with a triple of his own.

The Devil Rays led 4-0 after one inning before adding one in the second and five more in the sixth for a 10-0 lead. The Cougars mounted a comeback with a four-run eighth and one more in the ninth.

The win puts the Devil Rays (34-29) three wins or three Lansing losses away from a playoff berth. The victory eliminates the Dayton Dragons from playoff contention. Southwest Michigan also gained a game on the West Michigan Whitecaps for the top spot in the division after they lost to South Bend 4-0 at home. The Devil Rays have not lost at home since August 9 against Fort Wayne. It is the longest home win streak of the season.

The Devil Rays will send Jino Gonzalez to the mound against Ryan Ford for Kane County in a Penny Hot Dog Night on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. It is Pre-Celebration of Hispanic Heritage Night with live music, Food & Drink specials, a Pinata and Kids Run the Bases. The Food Bank Homestand continues, where a non-perishable food donation will give each participant one chance to win a Used Car on September 5.
