Burlington Bees News Release
Burlington, IA (August 29, 2005) Dusty Dossett hadn't pitched in eleven days, but still allowed just one run in seven innings to lead the Burlington Bees (29-34, 63-70) to a 6-1 victory over the Clinton LumberKings (28-35, 66-67) tonight at Community Field. The win snaps the Bees' season-high nine-game losing streak and at 36-32 guarantees the team of a winning record at home for the year with just three more left to play.
Dossett (1-1) last start was on August 18th against Wisconsin and missed a turn when the rotation was shuffled after the back-to-back off days last week. He retired 12 of the first 13 batters he faced in the game and kept the LumberKings off the scoreboard through five innings. He gave up just one run on an RBI single by Casey Benjamin in the top of the sixth and finished off a scoreless seventh with a strikeout of Brandon Cashman for his fifth strikeout of the game. Adam Rowe was perfect in the final two innings in relief for the Bees and earned his seventh save.
The Bees got on the board in the bottom of the second. Kenard Springer led off with a single, moved to second on a groundout, and scored on a two-out single to right by Rusty Brown. Brown leads the team with 68 RBI. Darwinson Salazar launched a double over the head of Cashman in center to drive in Brown all the way from first and extend the Bees' lead to 2-0. Clinton starter John Bannister (8-10) hit two batters with a pitch in the fourth inning and got out of the jam, but after hitting Cody Cure with a pitch in the fifth inning, Ed Lucas doubled to advance Cure to third and Damaso Espino grounded out to drive him in for the Bees' third run. The RBI was the 129th of Espino's Bees career, tying him with James Clark (1965-66, '69) for fourth on the organization's career list.
Bannister remained in the game into the bottom of the eighth inning, but after a leadoff walk to Espino and another single from Springer, gave way to Edwin Vera out of the Clinton bullpen. Gary Perez greeted Vera with an infield single as he faked a bunt and hit a soft liner past the mound to load the bases. Eddie Solis hit a ground ball just inside the first base bag and down the right field line that cleared the bases and extended the Bees' lead to 6-1. Solis has hit in four straight games. Cure's career-high nine-game hitting streak was snapped with an 0-4 night at the plate.
The Bees and LumberKings continue this series tomorrow night at 7:00 at Community Field. Tomorrow is the final Hawk Eye 2-for-Tuesday of the season as the Bees have just three home games left for the year, finishing this week on Thursday. LH Danny Christensen (3-6, 3.55) will start for the Bees against RH Michael Schlact (9-7, 4.23) for the LumberKings. The gates open at 6:00 and the game will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 6:40.
