Kane County Cougars News Release

GENEVA, Ill.- It took the Cougars 33 games to reach double digits in the loss category and it came with a 5-3 drop to the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers Wednesday at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark in front of 7,433. The Cougars (23-10) loss to Wisconsin (14-18) ended an 11-game winning streak at home.

Michael Wagner kept Wisconsin at three runs in his Cougar debut until the ninth inning, when the Timber Rattlers took a late advantage. Three consecutive hits by Taylor Brennan, Omar Garcia and David Denson produced a 4-3 lead for the visiting team. Angel Ortega's suicide squeeze brought home Garcia to add an insurance run for the Timber Rattlers 5-3.

The Cougars made noise in the ninth with a David Bote double and a pinch hit single by Will Remillard, but Tyler Alexander struck out Jake Hannemann and Carlos Penalver to put away a win for Wisconsin.

For the first time in the series, the Cougars took the first lead of the ballgame as they scratched a run in the opening inning. Yasiel Balaguert connected on a two-out double to score Ben Carhart, who reached on a walk.

In the second inning, Denson ended Justin Amlung's 10-straight scoreless inning streak with a two-run homer over the left field wall to give the Timber Rattlers a 2-1 advantage.

Another two-out run allowed the Cougars to get back even with the Timber Rattlers as Shawon Dunston Jr. plated Cael Brockmeyer with a single late in the second to even the score 2-2.

Both starting pitchers continued to cruise with scoreless frames until the Cougars tacked a run in fifth. Hannemann led off the inning with a triple and scored on a wild pitch for the Cougars second lead 3-2.

The Timber Rattlers ended another streak for Amlung when Clint Coulter homered in the sixth to become the first player to record a hit off the Cougar pitcher in the last 14 plate appearances. The second Wisconsin long ball of the day tied up the game at three.

Alexander (2-3) picked up the win pitching three scoreless frames and striking out three. Wagner (0-1) suffered the loss allowing two runs through two and two-third innings on two walks and four hits.

The Cougars now begin a six-game road trip starting in Burlington. Duane Underwood (0-0, 3.24) will pitch for the Cougars against the Bees' Garrett Nuss (3-0, 2.96). First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. and can be heard on AM 1280 WBIG and kccougars.com.
