Hot Rods Complete Sweep of South Bend

South Bend, Ind. - The Bowling Green Hot Rods (Class-A/Tampa Bay Rays) completed the sweep of the South Bend Silver Hawks (Arizona Diamondbacks) on Wednesday afternoon, 7-4. The Hot Rods won their sixth consecutive game, and the triumph moves them to within two games of the .500 mark as their record now stands at 15-17.

Bowling Green wasted no time as they plated two runs in the first. Juniel Querecuto led off with a bunt single that extended his hitting streak to 11 games. Kean Wong moved him to third with a double to left field. Armando Araiza hit a sacrifice fly to center and Querecuto scored, but Wong was thrown out trying to advance to third base. The play moved Johnny Field to second, and as he stole third, the throw from catcher B.J. Perez went into left field and Field advanced home.

After Joe Munoz leveled the score with a two-run home run in the bottom of the first, the Hot Rods went back in front with a pair of runs in the second. Oscar Hernandez started the inning with a walk, and then moved to third when Ty Young doubled to left-center field. Querecuto hit a ball under the glove of Munoz that allowed both runners to score, and put Bowling Green back in front, 4-2.

Querecuto began another rally with a lead-off double in the fifth. He moved to third on a single by Field, then scored when Armando Araiza laid down a bunt and reached on an error by the pitcher Blayne Weller. Granden Goetzman capped the inning with a double to plate Field, and give the Hot Rods a 6-2 lead.

South Bend cut the lead in half in the sixth with runs batted in by Stryker Trahan and Steve McQuail. Araiza would give the game its final run when he led off the seventh inning with a solo home run. The towering shot, his second of the year, went beyond the left-center field wall to give the game its final margin.

Hot Rods starter Chris Kirsch (2-4) worked six innings to earn the victory. He allowed four runs, three of them earned, and struck out three. Colton Reavis worked the final three innings to lock down his first save of the season. He compiled four strikeouts.

Jose Martinez (1-1) lasted just two pitches into the second inning before leaving with an injury, but he was handed the loss for South Bend.

Bowling Green has now won nine of their last 10 games, and will look to continue their season-high six game winning streak when they play Lake County (Cleveland Indians) in the opener of a three-game road series on Thursday night. The Pepsi Pre-Game Show will get underway at 5:15 p.m. CT on 1340 WBGN - The Ticket, and first pitch will be tossed at 5:30 p.m.
