Wisconsin Timber Rattlers News Release

GENEVA, IL - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers were 0-5 against the Kane County Cougars in 2014 as the teams headed into the final game of their three-game set Wednesday at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark. Wisconsin topped Kane County 5-3 and snapped that winless streak against the team with the best record in the Midwest League with some clutch hits and a couple of big strikeouts in the bottom of the ninth.

The Cougars (23-10) struck first. Ben Carhart drew a two-out walk in the bottom of the first. Yasiel Balaguert blooped in a double down the right field line and Carhart just beat the throw to the plate for a 1-0 lead.

David Denson gave the Rattlers (14-18) the lead in the top of the second inning. Omar Garcia singled with one out. The left-handed Denson lifted a fly to left that carried over the fence for an opposite field, two-run homer. Denson's second home run of the year gave the Rattlers a 2-1 advantage.

Shawon Dunston, Jr. got the Cougars back to even in the bottom of the second inning. Cael Brockmeyer started the inning with a single, but he was still at first with two outs. A passed ball with Dunston at the plate moved Brockmeyer into scoring position. Dunston would dropped in a broken-bat single to center on a 3-2 pitch from Williams and Brockmeyer scored to tie the game again.

Jake Hanneman tripled to start the bottom of the fifth inning for Kane County. He scored on a wild pitch by Williams and Kane County was up 3-2.

Cougars starting pitcher Justin Amlung retired thirteen straight Wisconsin hitters after the home run by Denson. Clint Coulter broke that string with another home run. Coulter's two-out, solo home run evened the game 3-3. That long ball was the sixth of the season for Coulter.

Wisconsin went back in front in the top of the ninth inning. Taylor Brennan and Garcia singled with one out to place Rattlers on first and second. Denson singled to right and Brennan scored to put the Rattlers up 4-3. Garcia went around to third on the single.

Angel Ortega's squeeze bunt was enough to get Garcia home with the second run of the inning and Wisconsin took a 5-3 lead to the bottom of the ninth.

Tyler Alexander, who took over for Williams in the bottom of the seventh inning, gave up a one out double and a single in the bottom of the ninth. That put the tying runs on base and brought the winning run to the plate. But, the left-handed Alexander struck out Hannemann and Carlos Penalver to close out the Wisconsin victory.

The Rattlers return to Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium on Thursday to begin a six-game, seven-day homestand. The first opponents are the Cedar Rapids Kernels.

Wisconsin had named Barrett Astin (3-2, 4.18) as their scheduled starting pitcher. The Kernels have Felix Jorge (2-2, 7.15) as their starter. Game time is 6:35pm.

The first 1,000 fans to attend Thursday's game will receive a poster of Timber Rattlers pitcher Taylor Williams courtesy of Dunkin Donuts. All fans can enjoy a 22-oz soda, a 16-oz beer, or an Arty's Old Fashioned drink for just $2 as part of Thirsty Thursday presented by Arty's Old Fashioned and 95.9 KISS FM.
