Frederick Keys News Release
FREDERICK, MD -The Nymeo Field crowd of 9,917 was silenced in the eighth inning, as a Robert Pehl three-run homer lifted the Wilmington Blue Rocks (54-83/27-41) to a 5-3 victory over the Frederick Keys (67-72/31-38) on Sunday night. It was the fifth straight loss by the orange and black. Troubles with runners in scoring position plagued the Keys once again, as the team ended just 1-for-12 with men closest to home.
With one out in the eighth, Elier Hernandez singled and moved to second on a wild pitch by Garrett Cleavinger. The Keys lefty then intentionally walked Austin Bailey. Mike Zouzalik came in to face Pehl, who drove the second pitch over the leftfield wall. It was Pehl's first home run of the year.
The Blue Rocks first baseman also drove home the Blue Rocks first run in the second. Following a double by Austin Bailey and a fielding error in center by Gonzalez, Pehl singled to make it 1-0. A base hit and a free pass followed to load the bases, before David Richardson walked Cody Jones to force in the second run.
Blue Rocks starter Corey Ray pitched 5.1 innings and struck out nine, while allowing two unearned runs. The Keys got on the board in the fifth, after Gonzalez broke for home as Rocks catcher Chad Johnson threw down to first to complete a strikeout. The run was unearned due to a missed catch by Carlos Diaz which enabled Gonzalez to move from second to third on a steal attempt.
Diaz was charged with an additional error in the sixth that led to Frederick's second run. With two outs and Aderlin Rodriguez at second, Diaz made a poor throw to first on a routine groundball to short. The throw got past Pehl, allowing Rodriguez to score.
In the ninth, Yermin Mercedes singled and eventually came around on a fielder's choice by Jay Gonzalez, but Jacob Bodner got Erick Salcedo to pop out to end the game.
Bodner racked up his second save pitching the final inning, while Sam Lewis (2-0) pitched 2.2 scoreless frames to get the win. Cleavinger (2-3) suffered the loss, surrendering two runs in 1.2 innings.
The Keys complete their regular season slate against the Blue Rocks on Labor Day. Left-hander Trevor Belicek (3-5, 6.67) starts for the orange and black against Rocks southpaw Matt Tenuta (7-10, 5.26). First pitch is slated for 2:00 p.m and the broadcast can be heard on 1450 AM The Source, frederickkeys.com and the TuneIn Radio App. For tickets, fans can call the Keys at 301-815-9939 or visit frederickkeys.com.
