Gamboa Gets Call to the Majors
September 4, 2016 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Frederick Keys News Release
FREDERICK, MD -On Friday night, former Frederick Keys pitcher, Eddie Gamboa, made his Major League debut with the Tampa Bay Rays. Facing four batters, the right-hander became the 151st Keys player to reach the big leagues. In 2016, seven former Keys have advanced to baseball's highest level, with Gamboa joining Parker Bridwell, Donnie Hart, Steven Brault, Ariel Miranda, Ty Kelly and Ashur Tolliver.
Coming on in the eighth inning, Gamboa, 31, allowed one run on a hit, walked two and struck out one over 0.1 of a frame in a no-decision. Signed by Tampa Bay this past January, the Californian became the second-oldest player (31 years, 256 days) to make his MLB debut for Tampa Bay. Only Jim Morris (35 years old) the inspiration for the movie The Rookie was older when he got his first taste of the big leagues.
A conventional pitcher at first, Gamboa became a knuckleball pitcher in 2013. Before having his contract selected on Thursday by the Rays, the right-hander was 6-4 with a 2.68 ERA (94 IP/28ER) in 27 games (12 starts) from the Triple-A Durham Bulls.
Gamboa was originally selected by the Orioles in the 21st round of the 2008 draft. He advanced to Frederick in 2010, and went 4-0 with a 0.55 ERA (33 IP/2ER) over 14 games with the Keys before a late-season call-up to the Double-A Bowie Baysox. He returned to Frederick briefly in 2012. Last April, he was moved up to Baltimore for a two-day stint but did not pitch.
The Keys and Blue Rocks play the penultimate game of the regular season on Sunday night. Right-hander David Richardson (4-6, 4.20) starts for the Keys against Rocks righty Corey Ray 8-6, 4.36). First pitch is slated for 6:00 p.m and the broadcast can be heard on 1450 AM The Source, frederickkeys.com and the TuneIn Radio App. For tickets, fans can call the Keys at 301-815-9939 or visit frederickkeys.com.
The Frederick Keys are the Advanced-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, and play their home games at Nymeo Field at Harry Grove Stadium. For more information about the Frederick Keys please contact Geoff Arnold by phone at (301)-815-9915 or by emailing at GArnold@FrederickKeys.com.
