Holland's Clutch Fourth Hit Rallies Loons to Victory
August 8, 2014 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Great Lakes Loons News Release
SOUTH BEND, IN - Malcolm Holland drove home the go-ahead run for the Great Lakes Loons in the ninth inning Friday night with a double down the right field line for his fourth hit in a 5-2 comeback win over the South Bend Silver Hawks.
Jesmuel Valentin followed up Holland's double with a long two-run home run to right field to put the Loons up by three and provided what proved to be unnecessary insurance runs.
Victor Araujo (5-1) did not allow a run in the final two innings to record the win.
The three-run ninth inning for the Loons came off South Bend closer Silvino Bracho, who had allowed just four runs all season entering the game. Valentin's homer was his sixth of the year and just the second served up by Bracho.
Bracho was working a second straight night.
So was lefty Will Locante, who allowed two unearned runs in a laborious eighth. The inning began with an error by shortstop Andrew Velazquez, who in addition to turning in several stellar defensive plays also committed two errors in the game. Later with two outs, Joe Munoz misplayed a bad-hop grounder hit by Josmar Cordero, allowing two unearned runs to score and tie the game at 2-2.
Loons starter Greg Harris settled down after allowing consecutive doubles to Velazquez and Taylor to finish the night with one earned run allowed in five innings for a no-decision. Matt Campbell provided two scoreless relief innings.
South Bend starter Anthony Banda fired six shutout innings and has not allowed a run against Great Lakes in 10 total innings playing for two different teams (South Bend and Wisconsin).
Velazquez and Taylor - the Nos. 1 and 2 hitters in the Silver Hawks' lineup - had five of their six hits. South Bend committed three errors in the game.
The Loons play the third game of a four-game series against the Silver Hawks Saturday night at 7:05pm ET. Right-hander Brandon Martinez (1-7, 4.58 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Loons against South Bend righty Blake Perry (6-4, 4.54). The game will be broadcast live on ESPN 100.9-FM and ESPN1009.com.
