Lansing Lugnuts News Release
LANSING, Mich. - The Lansing Lugnuts (21-26, 53-63) jumped on the West Michigan Whitecaps (29-18, 70-47) early and held off a late charge to pick up a 7-5 win on Friday night at Cooley Law School Stadium.
One night after a blowout loss to open the four-game series, Lansing used a ten-hit offensive attack to end a five-game home losing streak.
Before West Michigan starter Jon Maciel (Loss, 5-6) could record his first out, the Lugnuts jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning. Third baseman Mitch Nay drove an RBI single to open the scoring, and first baseman Matt Dean followed with a three-run home run that left the grounds of Cooley Law School Stadium and crossed Cedar Street.
The same two hitters struck in the third as Nay clubbed an RBI double and Dean plated him with a single to give Lansing a 6-0 lead.
After three unanswered Whitecaps runs, D.J. Davis hit an RBI single in the fifth to push the Lansing lead back to 7-3.
Lugs starting pitcher Chase De Jong (Win, 1-6) allowed three runs on six hits in his five innings, striking out a pair and tying a career high with three walks.
The Whitecaps continued to chip away with a solo home run by Raph Rhymes against Jimmy Cordero in the seventh.
Reliever Brady Dragmire halted the rally with a scoreless eighth inning, and Phil Kish (Save, 3) had a pair of strikeouts in a 1-2-3 ninth inning.
Nay went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and registered a double for the fourth straight game and the sixth time in the last eight contest. The Arizona native extended his hitting streak to 10 games.
Dean finished with four RBIs on his two hits, while right fielder Derrick Loveless had a pair of hits and scored twice.
The Lugnuts and Whitecaps continue the four-game series on Saturday night at Cooley Law School Stadium. Right-hander Brad Allen (3-4, 3.67) starts on the mound for Lansing, with lefty Kevin Ziomek (8-6, 2.36) pitching for West Michigan. LAFCU Fireworks will follow the 7:05 p.m. game.
