Lincoln Saltdogs News Release
LINCOLN, NE - The Lincoln Saltdogs had no answer for Grand Prairie on Saturday, losing 13-2 at Haymarket Park. Lincoln has now lost the first three games of this four-game series.
Grand Prairie was already ahead 4-2 when they broke the game open in the fifth inning, against Lincoln starter Jarrett Gardner (3-3). The Airhogs sent ten men to the plate in the frame and scored seven times, hitting three home runs in the process. J.B. Tucker and Drew Holder each hit solo shots, and Derek Nicholson finished off the inning with a three-run bomb to take an 11-2 lead. Gardner lasted just 4 1/3 innings, giving up nine runs on 12 hits.
Lincoln did have an early 1-0 lead, when Dustin Yount hit his seventh homer of the season in the bottom of the first. Grand Prairie came back with two runs in the top of the second, however, starting a string of five consecutive innings in which they scored at least once. The Dogs scored their only other run in the third inning under strange circumstances. Jonny Kaplan walked with one out, but looked to be picked off between first and second. Kaplan survived the pickle by diving under the tag at second base, then jumped up and stole third on the same play when he saw that no one was covering there. Skip Adams drove in Kaplan on an infield single, but Lincoln would not score again.
Rookie Calen Sutton relieved Gardner in the fifth inning for Lincoln, and although he gave up the Nicholson homer and two more runs in the sixth, Sutton held Grand Prairie scoreless over the final three innings, retiring 11 of the final 13 batters he faced. At the plate, Shea McFeely went 2-for-4, the only Saltdog to record a multi-hit game.
The Saltdogs and Airhogs play the finale of their four-game series Sunday night at 6:05. Brian Campbell is scheduled to make the start for Lincoln, while Grand Prairie is expected to send Scott Drucker to the mound.
