HiToms score late to down Grizzlies

THOMAVILLE, N.C. - One night after dropping a game at Gastoina, the HiToms returned the favor at Finch Field as they scored a run in the last of the eighth to down the Grizzlies 5-4 on Friday night.

The HiToms (9-5) found themselves in a four all tie with one out in the eighth inning and Garret Koster standing on first base after a walk. With Cole Sturgeon at the plate, Koster stole second to put himself in scoring position. Later in the at bat, Sturgeon pulled a base hit to right field and Koster rounded third in slid in ahead of the tag from Dallas Burke to give the Tommies a 5-4 lead they would not give up. Travis Tingle (S, 9) pitched a scoreless ninth with a pair of strikeouts to preserve the victory.

Gastonia (5-8) trailed by as many as three runs at one point in the game but rallied to knot the contest at four with a Grant Gajdosz solo home run.

JJ Jankowski (W, 3-1) pitched a 1 1/3 of relief to earn the win for the HiToms.

The Tommies will break for the next three days for the Coastal Plain League All-Star game but will return to action on Tuesday night when they travel to Hooker Field for a 7:05 date with the Martinsville Mustangs. The next time you can catch the HiToms at Finch Field will be Wednesday night at 7:00 as they welcome the Forest City Owls to town.

The HiToms are a proud member of the Coastal Plain League, the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 15th season in 2011, the CPL features 15 teams playing in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts. Furthermore, the CPL has had over 900 alumni drafted and 44 alums make their Major League debut thus far.
