HAMPTON, VA - Brooks Fiala struck out a season high nine batters, allowing three runs on seven hits to earn his fourth win of the season. Joey Wendle extended his hit streak to 14 games as the Steamers defeated the Pilots 7-4 to win their eighth in a row.
In the top of the first Deshorn Lake retired Ryan Brenner to begin the game. While facing Joey Wendle, Lake came up short after delivering a ball to Wendle and had to exit the game with a side injury. Bryan Beirlein entered the game and did not allow a run in the first.
Edenton, on the strength of three singles in a row, loaded the bases. Kevin Whitehead knocked in a run with a groundout followed by a two-run single by Bo Bigham. The hit plated the first two RBI for Bigham since joining the Steamers and it gave Edenton a 3-0 lead.
The lead remained three for Edenton until the top of the fifth. Joey Wendle extended his hit streak to a season high 14 games with an infield single to begin the inning. Zach Stewart doubled Wendle to third. After Giacalone struck out, Nathan Burns walked to load the bases. Brian Blasik hit a sacrifice fly to score Wendle from third and give Edenton and Fiala a 4-0 lead.
Fiala, in his first start since being named a CPL All-Star, showed why he was selected. He scattered seven hits through six plus innings for the Steamers and struck out a season high nine batters in the win.
Peninsula did crack the scoreboard against Fiala in the sixth inning. A two out double by Jared King paid off when Jake Cave lined a 3-2 pitch into right field that scored King to make it 4-1 Steamers.
Edenton got the run back in the top of the seventh. With two outs they strung together three singles in a row. Tim Saunders picked up an RBI on the third single when Burns scored to make it 5-1 Steamers.
Fiala came out for the seventh inning and was hit for a lead-off double by Jimmy Rider, followed by an RBI triple for Chas Crane that made it 5-2 Steamers. That was the end of the night for Fiala. David Teasley came in and allowed another run on an RBI groundout to Chris Cowell but retired the side and held the Steamer lead at 5-3 through seven innings.
In all, Fiala pitched six plus innings, allowing three runs (all earned). He walked one and struck out nine.
In the top of the eighth Patrick Scoggin emerged from the Pilots bullpen to pitch. He retired Bo Bigham on a ground out to second base before issuing four straight walks to score a run for Edenton. Sean Potkay earned his first RBI for a base on balls from Scoggin to make it 6-3 Steamers. Mike Devine came into the game and threw a wild pitch that allowed Wendle to scoot home from third and make it 7-3 Steamers.
Quattrocchi pitched .1 of an inning before giving way to Jordan Egan with runners on the corners and one out. Terrell Joyce hit a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Jake Atwell to make it 7-4 Steamers. Egan struck out Jimmy Rider to end the threat.
Edenton could not add any insurance in the top of the ninth and sent Ethan Cole out to the mound to try and close it out and pick up his eighth save of the year.
Cole allowed a single and a walk but closed out the Pilots without allowing a run in the ninth.
Fiala improved to 4-1 with the win, Bryan Beirlein took the loss and fell to 0-1 and Cole earned save number eight.
Edenton improves to 32-9 overall and 13-1 in the second half of the season with their eighth win in a row.
