Forest City Owls News Release
FOREST CITY, N.C. - Charlie McCready (Charleston Southern) tossed his first shutout of the season, powering the Asheboro Copperheads to a 5-0 victory over the Forest City Owls on Friday night at McNair Field. The Owls drop to 8-5 in the second half and 24-16 overall, while the Copperheads improve to 5-8 in the second half and 21-19 on the year.
McCready worked nine complete innings without allowing a run. The Asheboro starter struck out 11 Owls batters while only allowing one walk. Forest City called on Cullen Park (Tennessee Tech) for his first career CPL start. Park lasted five innings, giving up three runs (one earned) on five hits, while recording a strikeout and a walk apiece. McCready notched his second win of the season, while Park took home his first loss of the year.
The Copperheads wasted no time in getting on the board. Jacob Wilson (Memphis) kicked off the scoring in the first inning with an RBI double to left field that scored Marquis Riley. Tommy Simis (Cal State Northridge) followed that with an RBI single to center field. Although Simis was gunned down trying to stretch his base hit into a double, Wilson was able to cross the plate. The Copperheads led 2-0 at the end of the first inning.
Asheboro put up another run in the top of the fourth inning on Mike McCarthy's (Texas Pan-American) single to center field, then posted a two-spot in the top of the sixth. With a runner on second and nobody out, Simis smacked a double to left field, scoring Wilson. Two at-bats later, Simis scored on Sam Picchiotti's (Wright State) groundout to short. The Copperheads bumped their lead to 5-0, more than enough ammunition for McCready.
Konstantine Diamaduros (Wofford) was the only Owl to record a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 with a double and a triple. Simis finished 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs and runs scored.
The Owls will travel to Sims Legion Park tomorrow night to face the Gastonia Grizzlies. First pitch is scheduled for 7:30 PM.
