Morehead City Marlins News Release
Morehead City, N.C. - The Wilmington Sharks sent two three-run home runs over the fence at Buck Hardee Field on Thursday evening, and that was the difference as the Morehead City Marlins were defeated by the Sharks for the seventh time in eleven meetings between the two teams this season.
The offenses were spent after the exits of the game's starting pitchers. Both bullpens combined for eight innings pitched and one run allowed on six hits. Left-handed pitcher Aaron Stull threw the final three innings for the Marlins. Stull gave up a run on two hits, keeping the Marlins in striking distance.
Four Marlins recorded multiple hits, and all but one player in the starting lineup hit safely at least once. Shortstop and recently selected Coastal Plain League All-Star Joe Sclafani was 4-for-5 from the plate, raising his season batting average to .369. That ranks as the fourth-best in the CPL, as well as the second best on the Marlins team behind Chase McDonald's league-leading .414. McDonald went 2-for-5 on Thursday night himself, and he and Sclafani each had one run batted in.
The Marlins return to Big Rock Stadium on Friday, as they will compete with the Fayetteville SwampDogs in a doubleheader consisting of two seven-inning games. The doubleheader will include the Marlins' Pink Jersey Auction, which will benefit the construction and operation of the planned Crystal Coast Cancer Center to be built in Morehead City in the near future. The games will begin at 6:05 p.m., with gates opening at 5 o'clock at "The Rock."
