Brandon, MB - Nolan Ritchie scored 1:11 into overtime to push the Brandon Wheat Kings past the Calgary Hitmen 2-1 on Wednesday night at Westoba Place.

The Wheat Kings opened the scoring on a first period tally from Rylan Roersma before Riley Fiddler-Schultz drew the Hitmen even in the middle frame. Fiddler-Schultz was back in the Hitmen lineup after serving a one game suspension for a slashing major and tipped in a Briggs Orr point shot to notch his team leading 26th goal of the season.

The two teams played a scoreless third period thanks to a couple of big penalty kills by Calgary.

Goaltending was outstanding on both sides as Ethan Buenaventura made 37 saves in the Calgary net including a trio of breakaway stops. Carson Bjarnason finished with 32 saves for the Wheat Kings which also featured a breakaway denial.

The single point secured by the Hitmen was a big one, moving the club into sole possession of the eighth and final Eastern Conference playoff berth, one point up on both Swift Current and Prince Albert.

Now with 14 games left in the regular season, the Hitmen season long road trip takes a day off tomorrow before resuming Friday, March 11 in Moose Jaw against the Warriors. Calgary then make stops in Regina (Mar. 12), Winnipeg (Mar. 15), Brandon (Mar. 16), Edmonton (Mar. 18) and Medicine Hat (Mar. 26).

The Hitmen won't return to Scotiabank Saddledome until Sunday, March 27 to host the Swift Current Broncos in the Every Child Matters game at 2:00 p.m.
