Portland Winterhawks News Release
Robbie Fromm-Delorme netted a pair of goals, but goaltender Tyler Palmer stopped 47 0f 50 shots as the Victoria Royals topped the Winterhawks 5-3 in a closely fought affair on Tuesday night.
Tarun Fizer led the way for Victoria offensively with two goals and two assists, while Bailey Peach starred as well with a goal and two helpers.
Portland opened the scoring just 1:35 into the contest behind Tyson Kozak's 29th of the year. Some strong forechecking from Fromm-Delorme led to Cross Hanas finding Kozak with cross-crease pass and the Hawks' co-captain made no mistake. But penalties and errors cost the Winterhawks soon after, and goals from Tarun Fizer and Riley Gannon suddenly sent Portland into the intermission down by a goal.
Victoria extended its lead in the second period with Luke Shipley's third of the year, but Fromm-Delorme's first of the night quickly returned his club to within a goal. Kurtis Smythe found Fromm-Delorme streaking through the center lane with a stretch pass and the forward then deftly deposited the puck past Palmer. And when Bailey Peach converted on a penalty shot to make it 4-2 Royals, Fromm-Delorme came through again to net Portland's third of the evening, batting a deflected Smythe shot out of midair and into the back of the net.
Down by just a goal, Portland pushed hard in the third but could not crack Palmer, who made a number of highlight-reel saves before Fizer's empty-net tally sealed Victoria's win.
The Winterhawks and Royals battle it out at Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre again tomorrow night at 7:05 P.M.
QUOTE OF THE NIGHT presented by BBF TECHNOLOGIES:
"We did some good things as a team, but they have some top-end players and we just need to be harder on them. I think that's kind of what drove their offense there. But tomorrow we're gonna watch video, get ready for the next game and we'll come prepared for sure."
Winterhawks defenseman Kurtis Smythe
