Calgary Hitmen News Release

Calgary, AB - The Calgary Hitmen Hockey Club is proud to announce defenceman Jake Bean has been selected in the first round of the 2016 NHL Draft.

Bean was taken 13th overall by the Carolina Hurricanes.

"Jake is an exceptional individual and player and we'd like to congratulate him on this tremendous accomplishment, said Hitmen General Manager and Vice President of Business Operations Mike Moore.  "He has worked extremely hard for this day for the past two seasons, becoming an impact player for us during his rookie season and continuing his ascent as an elite defenceman in the Western Hockey League as a sophomore this past season.  He has an exceptionally bright future and the entire Hitmen organization could not be happier for both Jake and his family."

A native of Calgary, AB, Bean had a breakout year with the Hitmen, leading all Western Hockey League defencemen with 24 goals and in the process setting the franchise record for most goals in single season by a blueliner. His long list of accolades this past campaign include his 12 power play goals, which tied for top spot among WHL blueliners, and his 64 points, sixth among rearguards. He was also co-winner of the club's Tommy Gun's Original Barbershop Top Defenceman Award and named the WHL Eastern Conference Most Sportsmanlike Player.

Bean becomes the 51st player in franchise history to be taken in the NHL Draft and the highest defenceman selected since Karl Alzner was taken fifth overall in 2007 by the Washington Capitals.

The NHL Draft continues tomorrow with rounds two through seven at the First Niagara Center in Buffalo, New York.
