Wichita Wingnuts News Release
WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts (30-18) shut out the Amarillo Sox (29-18) 7-0 at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium on Saturday night.
Ryan Hinson pitched a complete game, six-hit shutout to become the Wingnuts' all-time leader in victories. Hinson retired the leadoff man in all nine innings, and retired the first two batters in each of his first seven. The left-hander struck out five, did not issue a walk, and lowered his ERA to a league-best 1.53. Hinson has not allowed an earned run in his last three starts. The complete game shutout was the first of Hinson's five-year professional career, and the first by a Wingnuts' starter since July 10th, 2011.
Wichita scored early and often against Sox' starter Jason Johnson. Jake Kahaulelio cracked a one-out solo home run in the bottom of the first to get Wichita on the board. John Rodriguez followed with a double off the left field wall and scored two batters later on a two-out, RBI single to right field from Brent Clevlen.
With two outs and no one on base in the bottom of the second, Jared McDonald singled through the right side and stole second base. Ryan Khoury made it 3-0 Wichita on a flyball single to right that scored McDonald. Khoury stole second base later in the inning to become the Wingnuts' all-time leader in steals (47).
Wichita broke the game open with a four-run bottom of the fourth. Colt Loehrs singled to center leading off and took third on a bunt single from McDonald that resulted in a throwing error by Sox' third baseman Brandon Jones. After Khoury walked to load the bases, Kahaulelio lined a single to center that drove in two runs. Rodriguez and C.J. Ziegler added RBI singles that helped open a 7-0 lead.
For a second straight night, eight different Wingnuts had at least one hit, while all nine reached base at least once. Kahaulelio, Rodriguez, Ziegler, Clevlen, Loehrs, and McDonald all had multi-hit nights.
Hinson retired 14 batters in a row from the third inning into the eighth.
Johnson took the loss, allowing seven earned runs on 12 hits in four innings. Johnson walked one and struck out zero.
