Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release

AUGUSTA, Ga. - GreenJackets pitchers struck out 11 batters on their way to beating Kannapolis, 3-2, on Thursday night at Lake Olmstead Stadium. The Intimidators (8-13) never led in the tightly-contested game, missing out on a chance to complete a series sweep.

Augusta (9-12) broke a 1-1 tie in the home half of the fourth inning, scoring two runs without the benefit of a hit off Kannapolis reliever Jaider Rocha. Rocha plunked Manuel Geraldo to lead off the inning, and Lucius Fox drew a walk. Rocha appeared to have Fox picked off first base, but with the base runners stuck between first and second, Kannapolis first baseman Corey Zangari threw the ball away, allowing Geraldo to score on the error. Seth Harrison cashed Fox with a sac-fly for a 3-1 lead.

Logan Webb (1-0) struck out six over 5 and 1/3 innings for Augusta en route to earning the win. He allowed two runs on four hits with two walks in his fourth start of the season. Jake McCasland took over in relief of Webb and spun 2 and 2/3 scoreless innings before Caleb Smith tossed a scoreless ninth for the save (1).

Rocha (0-2) took the loss for Kannapolis, giving up two runs (one earned) in the fourth inning. He finished with 2.0 innings worked, allowing a hit and two walks with two strikeouts.

Kannapolis reliever Ryan Hinchley was nearly perfect in relief, facing the minimum over the sixth and seventh innings. He struck out one batter while inducing a double-play to erase the lone hit he allowed.

Dillon Dobson led off the bottom of the third inning with a first-pitch home run, his South Atlantic League-leading sixth, to left-center field to put Augusta up, 1-0. Corey Zangari followed suit for Kannapolis a half-inning later, leading off the top of the fourth with a solo home run (5), tying the game, 1-1.

The Intimidators starting pitcher Luis Martinez lasted just 3.0 innings before his pitch count rose too high. He matched his season-high with five strikeouts but issued a season-most four walks while allowing a run on three hits.

Kannapolis pulled within a run in the sixth inning when Cody Daily singled home Seby Zavala, but the Intimidators came up empty-handed the rest of the way against the GreenJackets bullpen.

The Intimidators continue this 7-game road trip with the team's first trip to Spirit Communications Park to face the Columbia Fireflies for the first time. Kannapolis will send LHP Ryan Riga (0-2, 9.98) to the mound against Columbia's LHP Kevin Canelon (0-1, 4.20 ERA) with first pitch at 7:05 p.m. The team returns to Intimidators Stadium supported by Carolinas HealthCare System on Wednesday, May 4, to open a 7-game home stand against the Hagerstown Suns (May 4-6) and Lakewood BlueClaws (May 7-10).
