Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

Wilmington, DE --- The Blue Rocks set a franchise record for most hits allowed in a nine-inning game, as the Lynchburg Hillcats pounded out 21 hits in defeating the Blue Rocks, 15-1 at Frawley Stadium on Thursday night. Hillcats starter Derrick Van Dusen (6-2) was masterful, tossing a complete game four-hitter to pick up the win.

The only Blue Rocks run came on Jeff Ontiveros' ninth home run of the season, a solo shot in the bottom of the second inning to tie the game at one. Van Dusen's complete game came on just 101 pitches, as he struck out seven.

In the fourth inning, the Hillcats broke the game open by scoring 8 runs against Andrew Dobies (2-3) and Barry Hertzler. Pat Magness led off with a walk and scored all the way from first base on a double by Brad Rea. At that point, the Hillcats had a 3-1 advantage but they were far from done.

After a ground out by Mike McQuistion for the first out of the inning, the flood gates opened. Dobies allowed four straight hits and left with two runners on base after allowing a single to Nyjer Morgan. Barry Hertzler entered with two runners on base and allowed three straight singles upon entering. After he allowed a run-scoring single to Boeve that scored Morgan, the book was closed on Dobies.

The 21-year old went 3.1 innings and allowed eight runs (all earned) on eight hits and for the second straight start, he failed to make it out of the fourth inning.

Hertzler allowed a two-out, broken-bat RBI single to Mike McCuistion that scored the eighth run of the inning and gave Lynchburg a 10-1 advantage. When all was said and done, the Hillcats sent 13 batters to the plate and scored 8 runs on nine his. The eight runs allowed in the fourth inning were the most runs allowed in an inning by Wilmington pitching in 2005.

Lynchburg added on run in the fifth, two in the sixth, and one in the ninth on a Pat Magness homer to close out the scoring.

The two teams meet again tomorrow in the second game of a three-game series at Frawley Stadium. First pitch is 7:05 p.m. For tickets or more information, call (302) 888-BLUE or visit the official website of the Wilmington Blue Rocks, www.bluerocks.com.

Game Notes: Van Dusen's complete game was the first nine-inning complete game of the season in the Carolina League.

Catcher Jon Devries went 1-for-3 in his Wilmington Blue Rocks debut.

Magness' home run off Kyle Bono hit the video board in right centerfield. It was the eight consecutive game in which the Blue Rocks have surrendered a round-tripper, a season high.

The Blue Rocks finish the month of June with a 9-16 record.
