Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

MYRTLE BEACH, SC- During pre-game festivities at Coastal Federal Field on Thursday night a power surge knocked the electricity off for a brief moment. The power surge certainly didn't knock the electricity out of the Frederick Keys bats as the visitor's pounded out four home runs to help them rout the Pelicans 16-4 in game one of the three-game series.

The visiting Keys didn't waste any time lighting up the scoreboard. With one out in the top of the 1st inning CF Jarod Rine knocked a base hit up the middle. One batter later Keys DH Mario Delgado connected for his 12th home run of the season, a two-run blast to give Frederick a quick 2-0 lead.

With the Keys already on top by a pair of runs, the Baltimore Orioles farm hands exploded for a huge 3rd inning, in which 11 Frederick batters would come to the plate. Rine drew a lead off walk and moved to third on a single from Delgado through the right side, putting runners at the corners with no outs. Frederick's 1B Dustin Yount would bring in Rine from third with an RBI ground out extending the lead to 3-0. Later in the inning, with two runners aboard, LF Jeff Fiorentino cleared the bases with a three-run homer, his 8th of the season, to give Frederick a commanding 6-0 lead. The Keys added two more runs in the marathon inning, one on an RBI fielder's choice from 3B Bryan Bass and another thanks to an RBI single from 2B Nate Spears to give Frederick an 8-0 advantage.

Frederick continued their onslaught in the top of the 4th with four more runs. After Yount, RF Nick Markakis, and Fiorentino knocked three consecutive singles to start the inning C Ryan Hubele smacked his 4th home run of the season, a grand slam, over the left field wall to make the score 12-0. In the 5th the Keys pushed two more runs across, upping the lead to 14-0 and added another pair of runs in the 6th when Delgado struck again with his second homer of the night and his 13th of the season to give the Keys a 16-0 lead.

Myrtle Beach got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the 7th inning when LF Josh Burrus laced an RBI single, scoring CF Steven Doetsch who drew a two out walk earlier in the inning. Pelicans RF Matt Esquivel put three more runs on the board when he belted a three-run homer in the Birds four-run 7th. Esquivel's team-leading 13th round-tripper of the season brought the score to 16-4 in favor of the Keys.

Myrtle Beach starter Sean White (L, 8-3) gave up eight runs on seven hits in 2.2 innings of work. Five relievers saw action tonight including the Braves first round draft pick this year, Joey Devine. Devine slung a perfect 9th and struck out two of the three Keys he faced. The former N.C. State star has yet to give up a hit in his pro career (four innings). Frederick starter James Johnson (W, 6-4) earned the win yielding just five hits in six scoreless innings.

The Pelicans fell to 2-5 in the 2nd half, 35-42 overall. Frederick improved to 3-3 in the 2nd half, 38-38 overall. A bright spot for the Birds was the fact that Burrus extended his hitting streak to 14 games with a 1-5 effort.
