Hillcats Take Opener with Cannon Ballers
August 30, 2022 - Carolina League (CarL)
Lynchburg Hillcats News Release
The Lynchburg Hillcats struck early in their 4-1 victory over the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers, picking up a much needed victory.
Joe Lampe made his debut in fine fashion for the Hillcats (24-31) as they knocked off the Cannon Ballers (27-28) in game one of the series.
Kannapolis threatened early on, but Lampe made a diving play in center to hold a runner at second in the first inning to keep in a scoreless ballgame. In the bottom of the frame, the Hillcats would score two behind singles from both Jorge Burgos and Lampe. Lampe swung at the first pitch he faced and slapped into center field for his first career hit and RBI.
The Cannon Ballers would get a run back in the second inning on a Victor Torres double that scored Jacob Burke. However, the Hillcats pitching would settle down and not allow a run or a walk over the remaining innings.
The Hillcats would tack on another run in the third on a fielder's choice from Junior Sanquintin that would score Dayan Frias. In the fifth, Frias would score again on a wild pitch from Bowen Plagge. Frias would score three times over the course of the ballgame.
The Hillcats pitching staff would pick up 14 strikeouts behind solid outings from Trenton Denholm, Sergio Morillo, and Tyler Thornton.
The Hillcats and Cannon Ballers will square off for game two on Wednesday night at 6:30 at Bank of the James Stadium.
