'Birds Doubled Up By FredNats In Series Opener

FREDERICKSBURG, VA. - The Delmarva Shorebirds fell behind early and could never get back over the hump as they fell to the Fredericksburg Nationals 8-4 on Tuesday night at Virginia Credit Union Stadium.

The Shorebirds (44-76, 23-32) opened their final road trip of the season by suffering their tenth consecutive loss to the Nationals (67-53, 34-20).

After loading the bases in the last of the first, the Nationals struck first blood on a walk from TJ White to force in a run. Branden Boissiere then grounded out to bring in another run.

Geraldi Diaz doubled to begin the FredNats second and then scored on a Cortland Lawson RBI single to make it 3-0.

The Shorebirds cut it to a one-run game in the top of the fourth. Jackson Holliday walked to open the frame before Dylan Beavers doubled him in. After moving to third on a flyball, Beavers scored on a Reed Trimble RBI single.

The close game didn't last long as the FredNats responded with two runs of their own in the last of the fourth. Jared McKenzie doubled in Boissiere, who had walked to start the inning, before he scored himself on Diaz single.

JT Arruda singled to begin the bottom of the fifth, then stole second, and scored after two groundouts to make it 6-2.

Delmarva clawed back two runs in the sixth and seventh. Max Wagner drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the sixth before Carter Young made it 6-4 with an RBI groundout in the seventh.

Fredericksburg put the game to rest in the bottom of the seventh. Will Frizzell swatted a solo homer, his tenth of the season, to make it 7-4. McKenzie then collected his second RBI of the day later in the frame to bring the game to its final line of 8-4.

Jackson Rutledge (7-6) earned the win for the Nationals after firing six innings, allowing three runs on four hits and two walks, striking out seven.

Keagan Gillies (1-1) suffered the loss for the Shorebirds, allowing three runs on four hits and two walks, striking out one, over two innings.

The Shorebirds continue their series with the Nationals Wednesday, August 31 at Virginia Credit Union Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m with pregame coverage beginning at 6:50 p.m. and theshorebirds.com with Sam Jellinek on the call.
