Lynchburg Hillcats News Release
Josh Fellhauer homered in Lynchburg's game one win, but the Hillcats were unable to carry over the magic into game two. The Hillcats and Keys split the doubleheader, 4-3 in game one and 9-1 in game two.
In the first game of the doubleheader, the Hillcats fell behind early as Curtis Partch surrendered five straight hits in the second inning. He limited the damage, though, and only one run scored. In five innings, Partch let up seven hits and the sole earned run. He picks up his first win of the season.
The offense was silent until the next inning. Fellhauer led off the inning with a towering home run to right field for the first Lynchburg long ball of the season. That tied the score at one.
The next three batters reached, including an RBI single by Devin Mesoraco. Neftali Soto added an RBI groundout, then Kyle Day doubled home Lynchburg's fourth run of the inning. It was Day's first hit of the season.
Frederick added one more run in the sixth inning before Mace Thurman came on in the seventh. Thurman gave up one run before Soto snagged the potential game-tying hit. Thurman picks up his second save in as many nights.
Jeremy Horst and Scott Gaffney also appeared in relief, giving up no earned runs between them.
Both Fellhauer (2-for-3, HR, RBI) and Carlos Mendez (2-for-2) had multi-hit efforts
In the second game, the Keys again took the early one-run lead. Xavier Avery scored on L.J. Hoes' fourth-inning single. The Hillcats managed only two hits off of Frederick starter Nate Nery in five innings. When Nery left, the bats woke up.
Carlos Mendez knocked a two-out single in the bottom of the sixth. That was the first hit in a string of three straight, ending with Cody Puckett's RBI single that scored Mendez to tie the ballgame.
The offense went silent for both teams until extra innings. Xavier Avery reached on a hit by pitch. That was followed by a Kyle Hudson double and an intentional walk. With the bases loaded, Joe Mahoney knocked home three runs with a double. The Keys scored five more in that inning and the Hillcats couldn't come back
Brad Boxberger shined in his first start for the Hillcats. The Reds' supplemental first round draft pick (43rd overall) gave up one run on only two hits and struck out seven.
Aguido Gonzalez gets credit for the loss. He gave up six runs in 1/3 of an inning in relief. Brandon Cooney picks up his first win of the season for Frederick.
Lynchburg (2-1) and Frederick (1-2) finish up their 4-game series with a Sunday matinee. First pitch is scheduled for 2:05. The Hillcats will throw southpaw Travis Webb against Keys righty Cole McCurry. The first 1,000 fans into City Stadium will receive a 2009 Championship Team Poster presented by Walden Pond and the Planet.
