Extra Inning Onslaught Leads To Doubleheader Split

Frederick Keys News Release
In its first 23 trips to the plate the Keys had its fair share of hits but just five runs to show for it. That changed in a hurry in the eighth inning of game two of its doubleheader as the Keys shunned the memories of a game one loss to score eight runs, breaking a 1-1 tie to earn its first win of the season, 9-1. Frederick fell in the opener 4-3.
After Lynchburg tied the seven-inning game in the bottom of the sixth inning at 1-1, the Keys found life in the extra frame. With one man out CF Xavier Avery was hit by a pitch. RF Kyle Hudson then doubled down the left field line moving Avery to third base. An intentional walk to DH LJ Hoes loaded the bases with one out for Joe Mahoney.
Just hours earlier, Mahoney had lined out sharply with the tying runner in scoring position in a one-run loss. He would get redemption. Mahoney laced a bases clearing 3-RBI double to left-center field and the rally was on.
Frederick sent 14 men to the plate in the eight run outburst.
The Keys got great pitching from starter Nate Nery to get to extra innings. Making his first start of the season, Nery worked five scoreless innings allowing just three hits. Brandon Cooney worked 1 and 1/3rd innings for his first win of the year.
Frederick gathered more hits in the opener than the nightcap but could not piece together the big inning.
That came for Lynchburg in the third inning off of Keys starter Ryan O'Shea. O'Shea struggled with control, working out of a first inning bases loaded jam. But in the third inning Hillcats LF Josh Fellhauer homered to leadoff the inning tying the game at 1-1. The next three Lynchburg batters would reach as Lynchburg brought home four runs in the inning.
Frederick would attempt to rally as 3B Jason White doubled home Avery to bring Frederick within 4-3 and set the table for Mahoney.
The Keys look to split the series with Lynchburg Sunday, April 11th at 2:05 p.m. Cole McCurry will make his Carolina League debut for Frederick.
Frederick will then return home for its home opener Tuesday, April 13th at 7:00 p.m. against Myrtle Beach. For tickets contact the Keys Box Office at 1-877-8-GO-KEYS or purchase online at frederickkeys.com.
